The late hieromonk
of Mount Athos Theodoret of blessed memory was born in Athens in 1935. He
studied at the School of Theology of the University of Athens from which he
graduated in 1963. He was appointed by the same School as an assistant to
Professor Markos Siotis with the perspective of becoming a professor, but he
quit in order to live a monastic life. In his search for a monastery, he visited
several places, one of which was “Zarkadi” in Mount Athos, where he stayed for
three months with monk Theoklitos Dionysiatis. Finally, in 1968, he subjected
himself to the obedience of Elder Kallinikos of Hagia Anna. In 1971, along with
Elder Kallinikos, he broke off ecclesiastical communion with Patriarch
Athenagoras of Constantinople and sided with the Zealots. Soon, however, he
disagreed with them as well because of his traditional position on the matter
of frequent participation in Holy Eucharist, which was raised before by the
“Kollyvades” in the 18th century. Fr. Theodoret became a friend of some ecclesiastic
personalities of his time who struggled for Orthodoxy, such as Fr. Seraphim Rose, Fr. Chrysostom of Spetses, and
others. In 1986, he was ordained priest in America by Archbishop Vitaly, then
President of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox
Church Abroad. In the same year, he was expelled from Mount Athos because of
his actions against the heresy of Ecumenism. He fled to Paros, where Elder
Kallinikos founded the Monastery of The Annunciation of the Theotokos.
He reposed in the Lord on September 21,
2007 (old Calendar). His main works (all in Greek) are as follows:
1.
Dialogues in the Desert about Ecumenism
2.

He also issued the periodical "The

(in Greek), “Orthodox Word” (in

Agathangelos” (in Greek), “Ecclesiastiki Paradosis” (in Greek) etc.
